FIJI Run Across Virginia 2009

On November 27, 2009, the Virginia Tech and the Univer-sity of Virginia chapters of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) ran the game-day football 157 miles from Blacksburg to Charlottes-ville for the annual VT - UVA football game. In the last 6 years, these two chapters have raised over $200,000 for cancer research. The event is accomplished using a relay race style run. This year the ball started in Blacksburg. The Virginia Tech brothers were responsible for running the game ball to Lynchburg. Once they reached Lynchburg, brothers from the University of Virginia took over and carried the ball to Charlottesville. The ball is run by one brother at a time, and each brother runs about a mile before handing the ball off. Other participants rode on a tour bus following the runners along the route. FIJI would like to remind you that every dollar counts, and helps bring us that much closer to finding a cure. To learn more about how you can help visit, the Jimmy V foundation at www.jimmyv.org or www.fijirunacrossvirginia.com.

Pi Kappa Alpha Fireman’s Challenge

In an effort to give back to the community, the men Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity kicked off their 7 annual Fireman’s Challenge philanthropy during the week of October 11 through 16, 2009. The focus of the philanthropy was to raise money for the local Blacksburg Fire Department. The money was directed towards funding emergency response teams, fire safety education, the fire safety trailer, and specialty equipment.

The week consisted of several fun and competitive events between sororities in which points were awarded for participation, attendance, and place in each activity. The week kicked off with concert night featuring performances by fraternity brothers and local favorite, The Shack Band. Other events included a car wash at the Advanced Auto Parts shop, a flag football tournament, and a brother’s auction, in which brothers serving as sorority coaches were auctioned off.

The philanthropy has produced great success in past years and organizers Travis Dalrymple and Jonathan Brodie set even higher standards for this year. "Fireman's Challenge, as far as the entire week is concerned, went extremely well," said Dalrymple.

The week’s events raised around $13,000, which is more money than any other Fireman's Challenge that Pike has had in the past. PIKE has already begun planning for next year's competition. They believe if they incorporate the community as well as the sororities into the challenge then they should be able to raise at least $15,000.

The brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha are extremely proud of this year's efforts, and the Blacksburg Fire Department was thankful for the continued generosity. The Fraternity is excited to continue its success in the future and looks forward to continuously supporting the local Blacksburg Community.
