DUI Speaker

On November 19, 2009 in Burruss Auditorium, the Interfraternity council hosted acclaimed DUI speaker Mark Sterner. Sterner shared with those in attendance his personal story of bad decisions he made that forever changed his life and ended the lives of his three best friends and fraternity brothers. Just months before his graduation, Sterner and four of his fraternity brothers headed to Spring Break. Each night of spring break, one of them would be the designated driver. However, on the final night, the brothers decided that the least drunk among them would drive home. Sterner ended up with the keys at the end of the night. The next morning, his three best friends were dead, and Sterner lay in the hospital critically injured and facing three felony counts of manslaughter. Instead of being the first in his family to graduate college, he became the first to go to prison. Sterner showed a videotape he and his friends made of their Spring Break, ending just minutes before the crash. Sterner’s story was extremely powerful for those in attendance. The Interfraternity Council hopes as a result of Sterner’s presentation that individuals in our community and the Virginia Tech community will think twice about getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking.
